Magistrates Court

If you face proceedings before the Magistrates’ Court, seek appropriate legal representation without delay. Lawyers at Lexis Solicitors have helped many individuals required to attend the Magistrates’ Court following allegations of criminal offences.

When represented in a Magistrates’ Court, you will be guided through the court process by our expert lawyers which will involve:

  • Considering the prosecution’s evidence
  • Providing advice on the strength of the prosecution’s case
  • Informing you fully of your rights and options before making a decision about a plea

When making a decision on a plea, it is important to remember that a guilty plea will proceed to sentencing and a not guilty plea will proceed to trial, where the prosecution’s case can be fully tested by our lawyers.

Almost all criminal cases begin in the Magistrates’ Court and are known as ‘summary cases’. Although some are transferred to the Crown Court, over 90 per cent of cases are finalised in a Magistrates’ Court. A number of cases can only be considered in the Crown Court; these include cases involving murder, manslaughter, serious assault and robbery. Many others can only be dealt with by a Magistrates’ Court, and include: Most motoring offences, Some public order offences, many regulatory offences, Criminal damage under a certain value and Minor assaults. However, many Magistrates’ Court cases can be sent to the Crown Court for sentence and in other limited circumstances.
